Two-factor sign-in

Ask for a code from an authenticator app as well as your password when you sign in to the inbox, and keep your backup codes safe.

On this page

Two-factor sign-in protects your access to the inbox even if someone learns your password. Once it is on, signing in to the inbox with your email and password also asks for a six-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator or Authy. Each person turns it on for their own account.

Before you start

  • Install an authenticator app on your phone.
  • Have a safe place ready for your backup codes, such as a password manager.

Turn it on

  1. In the inbox, select your picture at the bottom of the sidebar, then Profile settings.
  2. In the Security section (1), select Manage Two-Factor Authentication (2).
  1. Select Enable Two-Factor Authentication (1).
  1. Under Scan QR Code with Your Authenticator App, scan the code with your app. If you cannot scan it, select Can't scan? Enter code manually and copy the Secret Key into the app.
  2. Type the code your app shows into Enter the 6-digit code from your authenticator app, then select Verify & Continue.
  3. Save Your Backup Codes appears. Select Download or Copy All and store them; you will not see them again.
  4. Tick “I have saved my backup codes in a secure location…”, then select Complete Setup.

The status changes to Two-factor authentication is active.

Signing in afterwards

  1. Sign in with your email and password as usual.
  2. The Two-Factor Authentication screen appears. Enter the code from your app and select Verify.
  3. If your phone is not with you, select Try another verification method, choose Backup Code, and enter one of your codes.

Each backup code works once. When you are running low you see a reminder; select Regenerate Backup Codes on the two-factor page and enter a code from your app. Your old codes stop working.

Turn it off

  1. Open the Two-Factor Authentication page from Profile settings.
  2. Select Disable Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Enter your Password and either a code from your app or a backup code, then select Disable 2FA.
Note: if you lose both your authenticator app and your backup codes, contact Hadir Chat support. Because the inbox asks for the code, the account dashboard on hadir.chat may show “Your inbox account uses two-step verification, which we cannot check here.”; reset your password to sign in.
